Quick Tip

So, you have high speed internet
but it still takes a long time to download files. Why is that? Well, usually
the problem is that the server you are downloading from is slow or has
a slow connection. Remember, just because you're fast doesn't mean everyone
else on the net is.

This is National Notepad Week—that's why we have two more Notepad tips
for you today. Keep reading to learn some printing tips and a cool log
trick. Be sure to check out the Friday Funny and Amanda's Cool Site of
the Day.

Computers 101

Q:

When I print a Notepad file is it possible to change any settings like
the margins?

A:

Notepad does let you control some aspects of printing. You can set margins
and change your header and footer. I know, it ain't much, but what do
you want for a plain text file creator?

Keep in mind that the
changes you make will affect all docs viewed in your notepad and will
not be saved to the txt file as formatting.

In Notepad, go to
File/Page Setup. There you can select paper orientation
and margin size—that's pretty self-explanatory.

But wait, what is
this "&f" stuff in the header and "Page &p"
in the footer? Well, that tells the header to print the file name and
the footer to show the page number. You can change these if you know the
right codes—and you will because I'm going to give them to you.

&f - shows the
file name or "Untitled" if it doesn't have one

&d - displays
the date

&t - inserts the
time according to your computer's clock

&p - shows the
page number

Since you can use more than one combination in the header or footer box
these code can come in handy...

&& - puts
in an ampersand (&)

&l (for left),
&c (for center), &r (for right) will align the header or footer.
To use this put the code first followed by the other code you want to
use, for example: &l &d &r &p will align the date left
and the page number right.

You can also put in
your own text in the header or footer and it will be printed such as "Page"
next to &p or a title in the header.

Who knew that little
ol' Notepad had it in her?

Tip of the Day

size=2>Creating a .LOG file in Notepad

One more Notepad tip
to finish off the week. This is one of my favorites tricks—it's the
.LOG function. Try this:

Open up Notepad by
going to Start / Run and typing in "notepad" (or Start / Programs / Accessories / Notepad) and type:

.LOG

at the top of a new,
blank document. You just made a log file! :-)

So what, right? Well,
a log file is just like a journal in a way. From then on, every time you
make an entry in that file, Notepad adds a time and date stamp for you.
You'll see the stamp the next time you open the file. (Try it—save
the file somewhere, then open it up again. Nifty huh?)

Some find this useful
in various cases, such as keeping track of changes you made to something,
how many times something happened, logging phone messages, or even just
keeping a journal.

If you already have
the log open and want to add another time, just hit F5.

And you thought Notepad
was just for ReadMe files.

Shift Key FAQ

Q: My shift keys have little
arrows on them. Does that mean the *real* shift keys are located above
them, and these keys are just little signs to point them out?

A: Nope, they're the Real McCoy.
The little arrows mean "up", as in "look up at the screen".
Your keyboard is telling you to learn to touch type and quit staring at
your fingers.

Q: What happens if I press
both shift keys?

A: Even bigger letters
may show up on your screen. You should not use this feature, however,
because these letters are also brighter, and may cause Screen Burn, which
would be particularly embarrassing if you were typing something naughty
at the time.

Q: There are two shift keys,
which should I use?

A: Avoid unnecessary wear on
either shift key by alternating between the two. Keep track of your usage
of each key so that you press them in equal amounts. Remember, it's better
to go to a little trouble than wind up with a broken shift key.

...Note sarcasm. These
are not real tips.

Cool Site

Super
Bowl Ads

Just in time for the Big Game
comes the Super Bowl Ads site. For those of you who religiously watch
the Super Bowl you know that the ads during the game are usually great,
and that a lot of money is spent on getting them air time for that slot.
If you're like me you watch the Super Bowl just for the ads.

This site is all about
those advertisements, you can rate your favorite Superbowl ads from over
the years with their poll, and find out what companies have ads this year.

You can even go back
and see where your favorite commercials rated in the polls as far back
as 1998, where you can watch them again and see the results. You can even
read write ups on them.

This year the cost of a 30
second spot will average approx 2.4 million, 4.3 percent above last year.
You'll find many more interesting facts.

If you scroll down the page
you'll also be able to take a look at sneak previews for this year including
one for Careerbuilder.com that features a cast of chimpanzees, even see
what commercials were rejected for the Super Bowl.

All in all an interesting site,
best viewed with Cheetos and pop.

Monthly Wallpaper

February
Wallpaper is Here!

OK,
I try to stay as seasonal as possible with this stuff, but I've had it
up to (and over) my boots with snow. So, I had to put in a couple warmer
weather shots this month. I still have a winter photo, but you wont' see
that again till November or December! Enjoy!

Waterfall
In Hocking Hills -

This
was taken just before the river plunges over "Upper Falls"
in Hocking Hills State Park, OH. I'm not even sure if it has
a name, but I liked it :-)

Squirrel
On A Post -

This
is one of the squirrels my dogs motivate into a workout every time
he sets paw in the backyard. This time, I think he stole a neighbor's
bird feeder thingy.

Pine
Touching Snow -

This
was taken at a local park after a recent snowfall. It cost me a
bootful of snow, but I think it was worth it.

As
always, these are 100% free. Just head to the site to pick 'em up:
