Quick Tip

No matter how good your anti-spyware
program is, it's always better to stay safe in the first place. Don't
download software from companies you don't trust.

If in doubt, do a
quick search on Google for "[company/program name] + spyware"
and see what people are saying about the program in question.

Keep reading to learn how to remove or install fonts. Be sure to check

Make Your Own Website!

Awesome Software Makes It Simple!

We just discovered a fantastic program called Web Page Creation Kit and it gives you all the tools you need to easily create your own web site!

OK, I don't know if you've looked around at any web designer type software, but the big name stuff is seriously expensive - $200+ for names like Dreamweaver and GoLive (and nearly $100 for FrontPage). So, when this deal came across my desk, I wasn't too sure what I would find. I knew the price was phenomenal, but frankly, that fact made me think it would never compare to the major players.

Well, I'm happy to report that I was waaaaaay wrong. This thing is really amazing! It can do pretty much everything the big boys can, but it won't drain your wallet. Plus, it's really easy to work with, so it's great for everyone!

It has tons of built in wizards and helpful guides to make creating your web site as easy as possible. It's aimed at beginners, but is powerful enough to handle just about anything you throw at it. In fact, I could easily manage the thousands of pages we have at WorldStart with this program!

Every day, we have people asking, "How can I make a website?" Well, here's the easiest way we've com across so far!

Look at these awesome features:

Get Started Quickly

Create your site in minutes using professionally designed templates and wizards.

Create and Edit Graphics

Enables you to create, design and place graphic objects anywhere on your Web pages.

Add Navigation Bars

Let customers easily browse your site by adding navigation bar. Eliminate broken links and orphan pages.

Generate Frames

Create visual synergy on your Web pages. Easily add and manage horizontal and vertical frames on your site with no programming.
Manage Your Site

Visually track your links, images and bookmarks.  Update files and URLs with a single mouse click.
Publish Instantly

Transfer your site to servers or send files across the Internet simply and securely with a complete FTP program.
Increase Traffic

Promote your site. In seconds you can register your site with the most popular search engines for free.

It's a fantastic program!

If you've been kicking around the idea of putting your own web site together, but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on design software, this is really the way to go! Remember, if you don't love it, you can send it back within 2 month for a refund - you really have nothing to lose.

Your cost is amazing - just $18.97 and US shipping is FREE! This retails for $60, and is really a fantastic deal at that price. $18.97 is a super buy. Check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/customer/product.php?productid=18048

PS - As usual, quantities are limited (very limited). We haven't offered anything like this before, so it may very well sell out in a matter of hours. Please get to the site early if you want any kind of shot at it! You've wanted a website for awhile - stop putting it off and take the dive!

Computers 101

Q:

I have like 500 fonts and I don't need them all—not to mention it
takes forever to find the right one. Is there a way to get rid of the
extras?

A:

Seems like every graphics program and printer software gives you free
fonts, then the next thing you know you have so many that you can't keep
track of them all. Many of them you'll never use, or they look just like
other fonts but with a different name.

This procedure can
take some time, so plan on being in front of your computer for a while.

To prune the list
you must first go to the Fonts folder. The quickest way there is Start/Run
and type in "fonts" (without the quotes). You can also go the
long way through the Control Panel if you prefer.

Change the fonts folder
view to "details" and you'll get a nice long list.

Here's the time consuming
part: for each font you should double click to view what the font looks
like. As you view the sample ask yourself, "Will I really
ever use this font?" If you answer no, then close the window by clicking
the "Done" box then hit your Delete key.

You will be asked
if you want to remove the font. Click "Yes".

Some fonts, like Times
and Arial, you know are keepers so go ahead and skip those. Others, like
"Shruti" or "Guatami", are less familiar and worth
looking at.

Another way you could
decide what fonts to keep would be to open your word processing program
and make a list of the fonts you want to keep, then go in and delete everything
BUT those fonts.

CAUTION: If you see
any fonts that have program names in them, for example "MS Outlook",
DO NOT DELETE. These contain symbols used by a specific program and may
mess things up.

One other thing to
consider: maybe you are worried about removing fonts you may need in the
future. Perhaps you are afraid of accidentally removing a font needed
by a program. If this is you, then create a folder called "Fonts2"
and move the fonts you don't want over to it. If you find you do need
the font then just reinstall it (see today's tip).

Once your list is
streamlined, font selection will be easier without all those extras in
your way.

Tip of the Day

Installing
a New Font

When you buy some
new fonts or download them off the internet you may need to manually install
them. Sounds difficult, but it really isn't.

If you downloaded
the font it may be in your downloads folder in a zipped
format, so first you need to unzip the folder. If they are on a disk,
then just have the disk in your drive.

Now, open the Fonts
folder. You can go to Start / Run and type in "fonts"
(without the quotes) or go the longer way through the Control Panel.

On the File menu select
"Install New Font".

Choose the drive and
folder where the new fonts are located.

Click the fonts you
want to add while holding down the Ctrl key, or "Select All"
then click OK. The fonts will then be added to your folder.

Now when you use your
word processing program, the new fonts should appear.

Weekly
Download: Microsoft Anti-Spyware Tool

It's not perfect—heck,
it's not even completely finished—but Microsoft's new anti-spyware
tool is free and effective.

Want to take a first-hand look
at it? Let's walk through it together.

DOWNLOAD AND SETUP

The first trick is finding
it. Here's a link:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

It's a "beta" version
right now, which just means that Microsoft doesn't offer any support for
it yet. If they move it when it goes "live" you can find it
the same way I did—search on Google for "Microsoft spyware tool".

You will be given the option
to "Validate Windows and take me to the download" or just download
the software. I chose to skip the validation process—it's not necessary,
and I'm a privacy nut. Either way, the software will download and begin
the installation process automatically.

When you first start the program,
select "Run a Quick Scan Now". It will take several minutes
and scan through all your Internet files and settings, the Windows registry,
and other important (and commonly attacked) file areas. Most of the other
options are automatically set for you—the "deep scan" is
scheduled to run at 2:00am daily and you will get new updates from Microsoft
as they are released.

I have been using several other
free spyware tools (Ad-Aware
and Spybot),
but this tool found and removed a host of additional trojan
horses
from my computer. I ran it on several other machines (ah, the
life of a tech weenie) and it was unable to remove everything from a couple
other ones. That said, it still got more than either Ad-Aware or Spybot.

ADVANCED FEATURES

A couple other cool things
to know about:

1. Real-time protection: If
you chose to activate the Real-time Protection, the program will continuously
monitor your computer for attempts to modify vital settings. I was very
interested to see several reputable-seeming sites try to install nasty
little programs without my consent. The real-time protection notified
me and blocked the programs.

2. Advanced tools: Don't play
around with these unless you know what you're doing! But this panel provides
a very simple "look under the hood" of your Windows setup, and
for advanced users it can be a great way to monitor registry changes and
other related issues.

3. SpyNet: Perhaps the longest-term
benefit of this program is the SpyNet. If you choose to join, when your
computer detects a new spy program, virus, or other problem, it will send
notification to Microsoft. In theory, this will help the program evolve
more quickly over time to better handle the threats that permeate the
Internet. We'll see how that turns out.

Happy surfing!

Cool Site

And
The Bride Wore…

The Introduction to this tells
you all you need to know: "While preparing for her own wedding, a
dear friend stumbled upon examples of strange, odd, and unflattering wedding
accessories. She kept the strangest of the lot, and I am presenting them
here, along with her comments." What scares me the most are the wedding
dresses you see from fashion shows.

Strange Headgear — The
Oddest Veils and Hats I've seen in a long time.

Sleeves Bigger than My Head
— Big Puffed Sleeves, need I say more.

Dual-Use Wedding Gowns —
Very interesting section, with funny commentary.

Dear Wedding Lady — My
Butt isn't Big Enough… These dresses definitely add a lot
to the whole hip region.

Flower Abuse — Some very
strange arrangements, and uses for flowers.

What Were They Thinking —
This by far is my favorite gallery, it is the one with the most pictures
too. I really thought some of these were atrocious. A lot of them are
from Fashion shows. You can tell from the odd designs and runways. Kung-Fu
Wedding was very funny.

Groom's Gloom, Do Unto
Others, and Bridesmaid's Lament — were short, and sweet galleries.
The bridesmaid's one was the most painful.

With a lot of funny commentary,
and a lot of horrid wedding fashions, this is a site that just might make
you laugh, and cringe in horror.

Monthly Wallpaper

February
Wallpaper is Here!

OK,
I try to stay as seasonal as possible with this stuff, but I've had it
up to (and over) my boots with snow. So, I had to put in a couple warmer
weather shots this month. I still have a winter photo, but you wont' see
that again till November or December! Enjoy!

Waterfall
In Hocking Hills -

This
was taken just before the river plunges over "Upper Falls"
in Hocking Hills State Park, OH. I'm not even sure if it has
a name, but I liked it :-)

Squirrel
On A Post -

This
is one of the squirrels my dogs motivate into a workout every time
he sets paw in the backyard. This time, I think he stole a neighbor's
bird feeder thingy.

Pine
Touching Snow -

This
was taken at a local park after a recent snowfall. It cost me a
bootful of snow, but I think it was worth it.
